What to See at Park Güell
What to See at Park Güell
With its unique structures, colorful mosaics and hilly terrain, Park Güell was initially conceived to be a high-profile gated residential community of 60 houses in the city. Here are the highlights of Park Guell in Barcelona.
Porter’s Lodge Pavilion
Near the main gates of Park Güell, on Carrer d’Olot, are the famous iron gates, designed to resemble palm leaves. You will find one pavilion on either side of the gates. The one on the left hosts a waiting room and a telephone booth and was initially used as a porter’s lodge. The one on the right was once Porter’s residence, now a part of the Barcelona History Museum.
Dragon Stairway
Easily one of the most popular attractions of the park, the Dragon Stairway features two dragons overlooking a flight of stairs. These dragons are made up of colorful mosaic pieces, and can be found near the main entrance.
The Hypostyle Room
Originally designed to be the market, the Hypostyle Room is made up of 86 striated columns. The outermost ones lean in like bent trees giving the whole composition a naturalistic appeal, perfectly encapsulated by Gaudi.
Austria Gardens
A donation of trees in 1977 from Austria was what christened this plant nursery as Austria Gardens. Developed later, it has a completely different look in comparison to the rest of the park and is a must-visit.
